PROCLAMATION
REQUESTED BY
WHEREAS, the Broward Caribbean Carnival is one of Broward County’s largest celebrations of popular culture, held for the first time in 2003; and WHEREAS, the Carnival features time-honored rituals of mas, music including pan, and revelry which are a part of the celebration of Caribbean Culture; and WHEREAS, knowledge of and participation in these rituals are critical to the cultural survival of the Caribbean people and their descendants; and WHEREAS, Broward Caribbean Carnival provides a crossroads where class, race, and gender inequalities between the various ethnicities in Broward County become unimportant, while differences of identity, nationhood, authenticity, and aesthetics are celebrated; and WHEREAS, to foster this understanding, BCCI will provide educational and cultural scholarships to Caribbean students in Broward County and the Caribbean; and WHEREAS, BCCI will also host events throughout the County, such as the Broward Caribbean Queen Pageant, Workshops, Caribbean Book Launchings, Carnival Band Launchings, Kiddies Carnival, Calypso Legends, and J’Ouvert; and WHEREAS, these events are a prelude to the main event of the Carnival, to be held on October 9th, the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend, at the Pompano Beach Harness Track; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA: That the Board hereby designates Sunday, October 9, 2005 as “BROWARD CARIBBEAN CARNIVAL DAY” and urges citizens to join in and celebrate the richness of Broward County’s cultural diversity. |
